There are many things to consider when buying your first electric bike. Here at E-Lux Electric Bikes, we've created a video series of what we believe are the 5 most important considerations when searching for your new electric bike.

Second up: Range!

It is very important to know and understand the distance or "range" a bike can go on a single charge. There are a number of factors the will determine an electric bike's range and the ability it has to go longer distances. In this video and post we'll help you sort it out.

Terrain and the amount the rider pedals have direct influence on the range of an electric bike. If you are going up many long big hills, your range will be reduced because of the extra load and power being given to the motor. Inversely, if the rider is pedaling very hard while under power, they are assisting the motor and not really using much battery power and could in effect ride the bike all day with light power assist. Since it is hard to determine the terrain or how much effort any one rider will encounter, it is best to not count on those variables and in turn judge how far a bike can go on a charge by evaluating its battery size and battery power. Since manufacturers may claim all sorts of figures when including those other variables to come up with range and distance and time numbers, we at E-Lux Electric Bikes, like to look at the facts.

In this case, bigger is better. New electric bike buyers should look for 48-volt batteries vs commonly used 36 volt battery. 36 volt batteries just down have enough power to make continual climbs or to go long distances. Likewise, looking for the amp hours of the battery is important. Amp hour for a battery can range all over from 7 1/2 amp hour to 10 amp hour to 13 or even 20 amp hour. Again the higher the better.
